Mixology: The Art & Science of Drink

Here’s your chance to learn about the art of cocktailing from the pros at Bradstreet Craftshouse.

The restaurant is teaming up with the creative people at Studio Bricolage for a special class, “Mixology: Cocktail Basics,” on Dec. 5.  

Those who attend will get a primer on the history of cocktails, learn about the tools of the trade and a lesson on making a number of great drinks. The mixology session will also include a lesson on the science of fermentation and distillation.

There are plans for a second and third MIXOLOGY session next year. Topics for the events include “Liquors, Liqueurs, Garnishing” and “Building Better Bitters.”

Studio Bricolage is a project of Leonardo’s Basement in Southwest Minneapolis. It’s designed to be a creative outlet for adults.

The cocktail class is $45 per person in advance and $55 at the door.

Girls on the Run

Running events have become ubiquitous in the Twin Cities. Seems there’s a race going on pretty much every weekend. One of the more popular Downtown races — the Life Time Fitness Turkey Day 5K — is on Nov. 26.

For many runners, area races have become a great venue for promoting causes. One such cause worth learning more about is Girls on the Run (GOTR) Solemates, the charity running program of North Carolina-based Girls on the Run.

The program is targeted to girls between the ages of 8 and 13. The girls train for a 3.1 mile (5k) running event and get tips designed to build their confidence and self esteem.

Runners involved in the Solemates program are required to raise at least $262 for their running event (the dollar amount comes from the 26.2 miles in a marathon).

Minneapolis runner Sarah Marsden, 27, just ran the New York City Marathon as a GOTR Solemate. She raised $2,500 for the group.

“I chose Girls on the Run as my charity for the NYC marathon because I wish that I would have had an organization like this when I was growing up,” she said. “I grew up as an overweight girl who led a very sedentary lifestyle — think watching TV while laying on the couch eating junk food after school and not outside playing with others.”

Her father started running 15 years ago on his doctor’s advice. While a freshman in college, Marsden started running, too.

“When I started running, I could literally run one block,” she said. “And, I was huffing and puffing while doing this. Fast forward eight years later, I have run nine marathons, five halfs, and a handful of 5Ks.”

Marsden said running has transformed her life. She’s lost 100 pounds and had a dramatic improvement in her confidence and self esteem.

“I wish that I would have started running earlier in my life and made these changes sooner,” she said. “I can only hope that organizations like Girls on the Run can help inspire girls  early on to change their lives and to make positive life choices.”
