Tracking the ballpark: Looking forward to fireworks

The Minnesota Twins are looking forward to fireworks at the open-air stadium in 2010.

Twins President David St. Peter said the organization is not close to making decisions about the frequency of fireworks displays, but he said the team would like to feature them at the new stadium.

“It’s a staple of virtually every ballpark in America,” he said.

St. Peter blogged about fireworks on the Twins’ website last month, and he said there are traditionally more fireworks shows at Major League Baseball ballparks than any other type of game day promotion. He cited a study by the Sports Business Journal that said 19 teams combined to use fireworks at 142 games during the 2006 season. The teams used fireworks more often than promotions such as concessions discounts, caps, bobble heads, T-shirts and concerts.

Some North Loop residents expressed concern about fireworks back when the stadium was being designed in early 2007.

“We certainly anticipate and hope to be able to showcase fireworks in the ballpark, but whether that means a designated fireworks show over the course of the season, how many of them, whether there’s fireworks involved as it relates to our nightly game presentation, those are all things that we’re going to obviously spend time, as we already have done, talking to the neighbors and engaging with the city,” St. Peter said. “But we’re not there yet.”

St. Peter said he did not yet know where fireworks would be shot off.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions with [the architect] HOK, and it’s a Downtown site, so we have to be sensitive to that,” he said. “All I can tell you is we want to do fireworks; we haven’t figured out when, how and where.”
