Turning scrap into art

UPDATED July 22, 2009, 10:03am

Entries from the Art of Recycling metal sculpture contest are on display today in front of the IDS Crystal Court on Nicollet Mall.

Northern Metal Recycling sponsors the scrap metal sculpture contest, which provides local artists with an opportunity to create works of art from junk. The Aquatennial event ended last week when winners were announced.

Participants were given one hour to pick their raw materials from the Northern Metal Recycling facility and six weeks to create their original works. Materials included anything found on sight, such as stainless steel and brass. Artists chose their own methods of creation, which ranged from welding to cast iron pourings to metal weaving.

Winners were chosen July 17 by a set of judges and announced on July 20. Rabi Sanfo was awarded first prize for his “Chronicles of a Warrior” sculpture and Kyle Fokken was awarded second for his boat sculpture, “Dead in the Water.”

Cash prizes were awarded for first-fifth place, but this year Cole Haritgan and Nino Cezar tied for 4th place. The public is invited to view the entries and vote for their favorite sculpture. The People’s Choice award will be announced today at 5 p.m.

Thirty contestants are allowed to compete, but this year only 24 presented finished sculptures.

Most contestants have participated in previous contests, but not all are full-time artists.  The contest gives participants an opportunity to sell their work, make connections with other artists, and if lucky, even get commissioned for another piece.

Sculptures are on display in front of the Crystal Court on Nicollet Mall until 6 p.m.

The contest is in its ninth year and is celebrating its increasing popularity as one of the Aquatennial events.
